Homemade Granola

This granola is crunchy and just barely sweet. Unsweetened applesauce replaces the heavy oil content in other granola recipes.

Adapted from Nigella Lawson's Feast

5 cups rolled oats

1 1/2 cups sliced almonds

1 1/2 cups pecan halves

1/2 c unsalted sunflower seeds

1/2 c unsalted pumpkin seeds

2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

1/2 c brown sugar

1 tsp ground ginger

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp salt

3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/3 c maple syrup

2 tbsp honey

2 tbsp canola oil

Preheat oven to 300 degrees

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl

Warm wet ingredients in a small saucepan at a low heat

Spread evenly over parchment lined baking sheets and bake for for 40 min, stirring every 10 minutes for even baking. Store in ziplock bags or airtight glass jars.

My wish came true - we just returned from 10 days in Bali! It was an amazing place to see and so much bigger than I had anticipated. We stayed in Ubud, Amed and Seminyak, all completely different and beautiful. I saw tons of monkeys, completed a taste test of all chicken satay available on the island, snorkled in the mornings, watched crazy surfers and visited many temples.

My favorite part of the trip was our sick bungalow in Amed. It's a 3 hour drive from Kuta and absolutely in the middle of nowhere (which was nice after seeing the touristy south.) When we would go to a restaurant at night (for the satay tasting), we'd place our order with the owner and then watch the deliveries arrive via motorbike, which contained each part of the meal. The chicken guy would come, then someone would bring rice, and then the owner would run across the road looking for cucumber and 1 1/2 hours later, we'd eat.

Tomorrow, it's off to Cambodia. First to Siem Reap and then to Phnom Penh. 3 months sure goes by fast.

Thailand

We spent 4 days in Bangkok, which was a major adjustment after a month in Vietnam. The skyscrapers, the Western fast-food at every corner, the high-end boutiques were just all so different. We spent our short time here wandering through temples and markets, ate lots of insanely spicy food and a few western treats (mainly coke slurpees) and went to see a movie (The Fighter. It was awesome.) A funny thing about movies in Thailand - after the previews, everyone stands up for about two minutes to salute the King, while they flash old pictures and video of him.

Tomorrow we are flying to Singapore!

Green Tea Kit Kat

While in Hanoi, we met up with our American friends who have been living in Japan for the past 2 years. They brought us a great little present: green tea kit kats. I wish I didn't know these existed, b/c I LOVED them. They told us that Kit Kat sounds like "Good Luck" in Japanese and that schools give these to children before big tests. There is also a soy sauce and corn flavor. I'll stick to green tea.

Today is my last day in Vietnam. Over the past month, we have traveled from Saigon up to Sapa, stopping in Nha Trang, Danang, Hoi An, Ninh Binh and Hanoi along the way. We ate our weight in pho and chocolate croissants, swam in the China sea, avoided motorbike accidents and robbery, came close to many wild animals, accidentally ate a meal of goat udders and took a billion pictures.

Next up, Bangkok. See you soon!

Best Ever - Sunscreen

I bought this Murad sunscreen for my trip and decided that everyone needs to know about it. If you're like me and absolutely hate facial sunblock, but don't want to get all skin cancer-y, this is the stuff for you. I heard about Murad's sun line in one of Lisa Eldridge's amazing tutorials and decided to test this one out in the tropical weather.

I have found most sunscreens for the face to be super greasy (even the oil-free kind) and strongly scented (even fragrance-free). I have used drugstore moisturizers with SPF for years but I still got burned on my face

This product is unbelievably light and non-greasy. I have been wearing it instead of moisturizer for about 3 weeks now and I absolutely love it. It absorbs quickly and works perfectly under makeup. Best of all, I have successfully avoided all burns. Murad makes a couple of different kinds of sunscreen for the face - I tried this one and loved it, but it was a little too pricey for a test-drive.

Hello from Vietnam! I arrived safely in Saigon 2 weeks ago after the longest flight of my life. Saigon is pretty crazy. If I had to pick one word to sum up Saigon, it would most definitely be "motorbike" (see for yourself here) Crossing the street is very, very difficult, as most streets do not have lights/crosswalks. To cross, you slowly walk into oncoming traffic, pausing every few feet so the bikes have time to see you and swerve.

After a few days in Saigon, we took an overnight train to Nha Trang, a beach town located on the south central coast. I wish I could say it's as beautiful as the photo above, but it's rained every day! We'll be here through next week and I am crossing my fingers for at least one good beach day.

Next week is Tet, the Vietnamese New Year and celebrations are already underway. Today, we were invited to a traditional lunch, where we were stuffed full of homemade dishes and exotic fruits. For desert, we had coffee jello and I tried raw sugarcane. Our host handed me a stalk, which looked and felt like bamboo. You peel back the outer layer with your teeth, break off a chunk and spit out the pulp.

After Nha Trang, we'll finish up Vietnam with a stop in Hoi An, (a town that is world famous for its tailors) Hanoi and Sapa and then it's off to Thailand and Cambodia! And if I'm really lucky, I might get to stop at one of the countries from this journey. Cross your fingers for me.

Other awesome features include online try-ons and at home try-ons (they ship you 5 pairs without lenses to try on for free) The company also donates a pair of glasses for every pair purchased. The hardest part is deciding on just one style. I need to replace my 10 year old busted pair soon and hoping these will inspire me to take out my contacts more than once a month.

I'm not a huge cookbook collector - I like finding recipes online, in magazines or checking out books from the library much better than having a large collection of books I rarely open. I only have a select few that I love, including Gourmet, The Barefoot Contessa, and How To Be A Domestic Goddess. And now, this book will join the select few. Flour Bakery was my absolute favorite place to eat when I lived in Boston. Flour is most famous for its sticky buns which were featured on the Food Network, but everything they make is amazing, from granola bars to homemade raspberry seltzer and arugula BLTs. I am so, so, so excited to re-create some of my favorites at home and recommend that you do the same.

A few weeks ago, I made my first Blurb photo book. I had made other photo books in the past through Shutterfly/Kodak, but found Blurb to be far superior. Most of all, I love the square sizes they offer. The littlest one is 7x7 and a perfect not-too-small size. The software was pretty easy to use and I really liked using my own font library for the cover, spine and all text. And finally - it's really inexpensive (only $12 for the softcover small square size with 40 pages). Here's a preview of my little book:

So....did you see it? I haven't yet, but probably will this week. It's hard to believe that #1 came out almost exactly two years ago. My girlfriends and I went to see it the night before my friend Kate's wedding (which was lovely and not dramatic, unlike the movie - happy anniversary!)

I didn't love #1, but it's hard to resist seeing #2. The series was just so good, it's impossible to not care about what these fictional characters are doing now.

I think I'm going to watch a few episodes this week before seeing the movie. What are your favorites? Mine are this and this one.

This past weekend, I was a sucker at the Chanel counter. I was kind of obsessed with Sandra Bullock's Oscar lipstick and gave in. While I am ok spending a little money on quality makeup, $30 for a lipstick seemed pretty crazy. So I went back the next day and returned my purchase and bought an even more amazing lipstick at CVS.

L'Oreal Colour Riche lipstick is awesome. The only reason I avoided drugstore lipstick before was the fact that you can't test it out before buying, but I took a gamble and love what I bought. While I still do love Bobbi Brown and Sephora, I'm only buying L'Oreal lipstick from now on.

I really, really hate drugstore deodorant. I have not found one that I think smells even kind of good. This, in addition to the fact that it might not be good to rub aluminum into your armpits everyday, made me interested in an alternative. How About Orange posted a great tutorial for making your own deodorant from just a few simple items, all of which can be found at any natural grocery store, so I went crazy last week and tried it out. I was pretty much expecting it to fail, and even waited a week to blog about it in order to test it out, but it really does work better than anything I have bought and smells amazing.

The best part is that you can choose whatever scent you like. I made a batch using violet oil, which smells a lot like this lovely perfume. Only more coconut-y, which is never a bad thing in my book.

I'm into oil this spring, with Moroccan Oil in my hair and this stuff on my face and neck. While I don't think I'd wear it under makeup, I love this Argan Oil from Josie Maran.

I'd recommend getting the travel size to try out first - you only need a tiny bit and it's much much cheaper than the full size.
